01The brief
Naples’ eastern industrial port is a district of abandoned and ruined buildings dating back to the Second World War. The brief asked for a House of Music as the focal point of an urban development plan that would revive the waterfront, preserve most of the existing buildings and establish a School of Music.
02The idea
The masterplan restores historic buildings, removes structures beyond repair, opens urban parks, adds sea platforms for tourism and sets the House of Music on an existing platform. The auditorium splits into two blocks — one tilted toward Monte Faito, the other toward Capri — wrapped by a translucent ‘container’ that defines them and lets them read as one.
03The outcome
The School of Music follows the footprints of the old buildings, using polycarbonate and glass to separate new from old. A sculptural staircase links the two blocks as the central feature of the interior.
